Abstract: This review examines I.M. Nick’s groundbreaking edited volume Names, naming, and the Law: Onomastics, identity, power, and policy (Routledge, 2023), which represents the first comprehen-sive attempt to bridge onomastics, bureaucratic policymaking, and jurisprudence. Through thirteen thematically distinct chapters, eleven leading experts explore how topics in anthroponymy, topony-my, chrematonymy, taxonomy, nosonomy, and ethnonymy are shaped by legal frameworks and official policies. Although primarily oriented toward a U.S. context and drawing mainly from secondary sources rather than original empirical research, the book successfully illuminates the complex interplay between naming practices and legal systems, particularly in areas such as personal naming rights, geographical designations, biological nomenclature, and trademark law. Despite these constraints, the volume navigates hitherto rarely explored territory, thereby laying seminal foundations for what promises to be a rich field of inquiry at the intersection of onomastics and the law.

Résumé : Cette recension examine l’ouvrage novateur dirigé par I.M. Nick Names, naming, and the Law : Onomastics, identity, power, and policy (Routledge, 2023), qui représente la première tentative exhaustive d’établir des liens entre l’onomastique, l’élaboration des politiques bureaucratiques et la jurisprudence. À travers treize chapitres thématiquement distincts, onze experts de premier plan explorent comment les sujets de l’anthroponymie, la toponymie, la chrématonymie, la taxonomie, la nosonymie et l’ethnonymie sont façonnés par les cadres juridiques et les politiques officielles. Bien que l’ouvrage soit principalement orienté vers le contexte américain et s’appuie essentiellement sur des sources secondaires plutôt que sur des recherches empiriques originales, il éclaire efficacement la dynamique complexe entre les pratiques de dénomination et les systèmes juridiques, particulièrement dans des domaines tels que les droits de nomination personnelle et de marques, les désignations géographiques et la nomenclature biologique. Malgré ces contraintes, l’ouvrage explore un territoire jusqu’ici rarement étudié, posant ainsi les bases fondamentales d’un domaine de recherche prometteur à l’intersection de l’onomastique et du droit.

Zusammenfassung: Diese Rezension untersucht den bahnbrechenden Sammelband von I.M. Nick Names, naming, and the Law: Onomastics, identity, power, and policy (Routledge, 2023), der den ersten umfassenden Versuch darstellt, eine Brücke zwischen Onomastik, bürokratischer Politikgestaltung und Rechtssystem zu schlagen. In dreizehn thematisch unterschiedlichen Kapiteln untersuchen elf führende Experten, wie Themen der Anthroponymie, Toponymie, Chrematonymie, Taxonomie, Nosonomie und Ethnonymie durch rechtliche Rahmenbedingungen und offizielle Richtlinien geprägt werden. Obwohl das Werk hauptsächlich auf den US-amerikanischen Kontext ausgerichtet ist und sich vorwiegend auf Sekundärquellen statt auf empirische Originalforschung stützt, beleuchtet es erfolgreich das komplexe Zusammenspiel zwischen Benennungspraktiken und rechtlicher Ordnung, insbesondere in Bereichen wie persönlichen Namensrechten, geografischen Bezeichnungen, biologischer Nomenklatur und Markenrecht. Trotz dieser Einschränkungen erschließt der Band bisher kaum erforschtes Terrain und legt damit grundlegende Fundamente für ein vielversprechendes Forschungsfeld an der Schnittstelle von Onomastik und Recht.
