Abstract: The study explores the concepts of toponymic attachment and toponymic detachment in urban environments, focusing on how naming practices reflect place detachment amid urban change. It highlights the role of toponymic detachment as a means of addressing dissonant pasts. Through interviews with residents of the Vuosaari neighbourhood, Helsinki, the study examines how people perceive and use place names, both official and unofficial, and how these practices relate to their sense of place and identity. By examining two specific examples of naming practices in Vuosaari, the article illustrates and makes visible the politics of naming. The research utilizes folk onomastics to analyse discussions about names, emphasizing the dialogic relationship between people and places.

Détachement toponymique urbain. Les noms de lieux comme symboles du changement urbain
Résumé : Cette étude explore les concepts d’attachement toponymique et de détachement toponymique dans les environnements urbains, en se concentrant sur la manière dont les pratiques de dénomination reflètent le détachement des lieux dans un contexte de changement urbain. Elle met en lumière le rôle du détachement topo-nymique comme moyen de traiter les passés dissonants. À travers des entretiens avec des habitants du quartier de Vuosaari, à Helsinki, l’étude examine comment les gens perçoivent et utilisent les noms de lieux, qu’ils soient officiels ou non, et comment ces pratiques sont liées à leur sentiment d’appartenance et à leur identité. En analysant deux exemples spécifiques de pratiques de dénomination à Vuosaari, l’article illustre et rend visibles les enjeux politiques liés à la nomination des lieux. La recherche utilise l’onomastique populaire pour analyser les discussions autour des noms, en soulignant la relation dialogique entre les personnes et les lieux.

Urbane toponymische Entkopplung. Ortsnamen als Symbole des urbanen Wandels
Zusammenfassung: Die Studie untersucht die Konzepte der topony-mischen Bindung und der toponymischen Entkopplung in städtischen Räumen und konzentriert sich darauf, wie Benennungspraktiken die Entfremdung von Orten im Zuge städtischer Veränderungen widerspiegeln. Sie hebt die Rolle der toponymischen Entkopplung als Mittel zur Auseinandersetzung mit dissonanten Vergangenheiten hervor. Anhand von Interviews mit Bewohner*innen des Stadtteils Vuosaari in Helsinki analysiert die Studie, wie Menschen offizielle und inoffizielle Ortsnamen wahrnehmen und verwenden und wie diese Prakti-ken mit ihrem Ortsgefühl und ihrer Identität zusammenhängen. Durch die Untersuchung zweier konkreter Beispiele von Benennungspraktiken in Vuosaari macht der Artikel die politische Dimension von Namensgebung sichtbar. Die Forschung nutzt die Volksonomastik zur Analyse von Namensdiskussionen und betont die dialogische Beziehung zwischen Menschen und Orten.
