Abstract: This article examines the historical context and key outcomes of the 1938 Premier Congrès International de Toponymie et d’Anthroponymie, held in Paris. This groundbreaking event, organised by Albert Dauzat and Charles Rostaing, gathered scholars from 21 countries to discuss the preservation and study of place names and personal names as essential cultural heritage. The event underscored the role of onomastics in preserving linguistic and cultural identity. Its resolutions proposed standardised methodologies and international collaboration, laying foundations for modern onomastic studies. Through these collective efforts, the congress represented a crucial milestone toward unifying researchers worldwide.

La révolution onomastique de 1938 : Pourquoi les onomasticiens avaient besoin d’un congrès et ses 8 héritages durables

Résumé : Cet article explore le contexte historique et les principaux résultats du Premier Congrès International de Toponymie et d’Anthroponymie de 1938, qui s’est tenu à Paris. Cet événement novateur, organisé par Albert Dauzat et Charles Rostaing, a réuni des chercheurs de 21 pays pour discuter de la préservation et de l’étude des noms de lieux et des noms personnels en tant que patrimoine culturel essentiel. L’événement a mis en lumière le rôle de l’onomastique dans la préservation de l’identité linguistique et culturelle. Ses résolutions ont proposé des méthodologies standardisées et une collaboration internationale, posant ainsi les bases de la recherche onomastique moderne. Par ces efforts collectifs, le congrès a marqué un pas essentiel vers l’unification des chercheurs mondiaux.

Zusammenfassung: Dieser Artikel untersucht den historischen Kontext und die wichtigsten Ergebnisse des Premier Congrès International de Toponymie et d’Anthroponymie, der 1938 in Paris stattfand. Dieses bahnbrechende Ereignis, organisiert von Albert Dauzat und Charles Rostaing, brachte Wissenschaftler aus 21 Ländern zusammen, um die Bewahrung und Erforschung von Orts- und Personennamen als kulturelles Erbe zu erörtern. Die Veranstaltung hob die Bedeutung der Onomastik für den Erhalt sprachlicher und kultureller Identität hervor. Die verabschiedeten Resolutionen schlugen standardisierte Methoden und internationale Zusammenarbeit vor und legten den Grundstein für die moderne Namenforschung. Durch diese kollektiven Bemühungen markierte der Kongress einen wesentlichen Schritt zur Vereinigung globaler Wissenschaftler.
