Abstract: This study examines Slavic and pseudo-Slavic toponyms recorded in the Maramureș and Rodna Mountains, both mountain ranges being part of the northern group of the Eastern Carpathians (Maramureș County, northern Romania), highlighting their etymological layers, semantic shifts, and distribution patterns. Drawing on dialectological surveys (ALR, NALR), regional linguistic atlases, and toponymic dictionaries, we investigate appellatives preserved in the mountainous lexicon (e.g., prislop, prihodiște) and their transformation into place names. While certain toponyms clearly reflect old Slavic influence (e.g., Glâmboaca), others are pseudo-Slavic formations rooted in Romanian appellatives of Slavic origin. Comparative onomastic evidence from Poland, Slovakia, Ukraine, and the Balkans demonstrates a wider Carpathian toponymic unity (cf. Oczko 2024). The results suggest a dual process: direct borrowing from Slavic populations, alongside endogenous Romanian creations based on loanwords.

Während einige Toponyme eindeutig alten slawischen Einfluss widerspiegeln (z.
