Abstract: This article explores the characteristics of secondary nominations based on the toponymic nicknames of the states in the USA. The extensive use of toponymic nicknames is a defining aspect of the entire toponymic system in the USA. This study gathered 428 nicknames of the states through a continuous sampling method from contemporary lexicographic, linguistic, toponymic, explanatory dictionaries, guidebooks, and online sources. The linguistic material obtained has been thoroughly examined in the article from various perspectives, including structural, semantic, linguacultural, and connotative analyses. Furthermore, an analysis of the cognitive mecha-nisms involved in the formation of toponymic nicknames has been conducted. This comprehensive study allows us to uncover the ethno-cultural identity of the American linguistic persona, illuminate the connection between nomination and the culture or self-awareness of the people, identify the mechanisms involved in the formation of toponymic vocabulary, and evaluate the creative potential of human thought in utilizing toponymic vocabulary. Through this research, we can identify the most productive structural models, cognitive mechanisms, semantic, functional, and evaluative characte-ristics of a toponymic nickname. The conclusions drawn from this study are supported by the results of quantitative analysis.

Recherche sur les sobriquets toponymiques des États aux USA
Résumé : Cet article explore les caractéristiques des candidatures secondaires basées sur les surnoms toponymiques des États aux États-Unis. L’utilisation intensive de surnoms toponymiques est un aspect déterminant de l’ensemble du système toponymique aux États-Unis. Cette étude a rassemblé 428 surnoms d’États grâce à une méthode d’échantillonnage continu à partir de dictionnaires lexicographiques, linguistiques, toponymiques et explicatifs contemporains, de guides et de sources en ligne. Le matériel linguistique obtenu a été examiné de manière approfondie dans l’article sous diverses perspectives, notamment des analyses structurelles, sémantiques, linguoculturelles et connotatives. Par ailleurs, une analyse des mécanismes cognitifs impliqués dans la formation des surnoms toponymiques a été menée. Cette étude approfondie nous permet de découvrir l’identité ethnoculturelle de la personnalité linguistique américaine, d’éclaircir le lien entre la nomination et la culture ou la conscience de soi du peuple, d’identifier les mécanismes impliqués dans la formation du vocabulaire toponymique et d’évaluer le potentiel créatif de la pensée humaine en utilisant le vocabulaire toponymique. Grâce à cette recherche, nous pouvons identifier les modèles structurels, les mécanismes cognitifs, les caractéristiques sémantiques, fonctionnelles et évaluatives les plus productifs d’un surnom toponymique donné. Les conclusions tirées de cette étude sont étayées par les résultats de l’analyse quantitative.

Forschung zu toponymischen Spitznamen der Bundesstaaten in den USA
Zusammenfassung: In diesem Artikel werden die Merkmale sekundärer Nominierungen untersucht, die auf Spitznamen für die Bundesstaaten in den USA basieren. Die weit verbreitete Verwendung dieser Benennungen ist ein prägender Aspekt des ge-samten toponymischen Systems in den USA. Diese Studie sammelte 428 Spitznamen der Staaten durch eine kontinuierliche Stichprobenmethode aus zeitgenössischen lexikografischen, linguistischen, toponymischen, erklärenden Wörterbüchern, Reiseführern und Online-Quellen. Das gewonnene sprachliche Material wurde im Artikel ausführlich aus verschiedenen Perspektiven untersucht, einschließlich struktureller, semantischer, sprachkultureller und konnotativer Analysen. Darüber hinaus erfolgte eine Analyse der kognitiven Mechanismen, die an der Bildung toponymischer Spitznamen beteiligt sind. Diese umfassende Studie ermöglicht es uns, die ethnokulturelle Identität der amerikanischen sprachlichen Persönlichkeit aufzudecken, den Zusammenhang zwi-schen Benennung und Kultur oder dem Selbstbewusstsein der Menschen zu beleuchten, die Mechanismen zu identifizieren, die an der Bildung des toponymischen Vokabulars beteiligt sind, und das kreative Potenzial des Menschen bei der Nutzung dieses Vokabulars zu bewerten. Durch diese Forschung können wir die produktivsten Strukturmodelle, kognitiven Mechanismen, semantischen, funktionalen und bewertenden Merkmale eines toponymischen Spitznamens identifizieren. Die aus dieser Studie gezogenen Schlussfolgerungen werden durch die Ergebnisse der quantitativen Analyse gestützt.
