Abstract: The Old Iranian (OIr.) compound anthroponym to which the Ionic Πρηξάσπης /prēk (h)sáspēs/ in the Histories of Herodotus corresponds is unknown. In the existing Old Iranian sources, there is no word whose Ionic form could have been Πρηξ- /prēk(h)s/. Here, after a brief introduction of two denominati and the discussion of previous suggestions, starting from the Early New Iranian (ENIr.) شْ خْ رَ َپ /paráxš/ ‘human buttocks, rump of an animal, hindquarters of a horse’, whose Ionic rendering is Πρηξ- /prēk h s/, it is shown that the attested OIr. fra-uu̯axṣ̌- ‘grown forward, horn, male external genita-lia, branch of a tree’ must have had the antonym OIr. */parā̆.uu̯axṣ̌/ ‘grown backward’, which was changed to the Ionic Πρηξ- /prēkhs/ with the loss of Digamma and a liquid metathesis, and later to the ENIr. paráxš with the loss of intervocalic -v-. In this way, Πρηξάσπης must most likely have been the Ionic rendering of the Bahuvrīhi OIr. *Para ̄̆.uu̯axṣ̌.aspa ̄̆- ‘one who has a croup (-high) horse’.

Prexaspes est le rendu ionien du vieil iranien *Para.wakhsh.aspa

Résumé : Le nom personnel composé ancien-iranien (AIr.) auquel correspond le Πρηξάσπης /prēk(h)sáspēs/ ionien dans les Histoires d’Hérodote est inconnu. Dans les sources iraniennes anciennes existantes, il n’y a aucun mot dont la forme ionienne aurait pu être Πρηξ- /prēk(h)s/. Ici, après une brève introduction de deux porteurs de noms et la discussion des suggestions précédentes, à partir du nouvel Iranien (NIr.) شْ خْ رَپَ /paráxš/ « fesses humaines, croupe d’un animal, arrière-train d’un cheval », dont la forme ionienne est Πρηξ- /prēkhs/, il est montré que le vieux AIr. fra-uu̯axṣ̌- iranien « grandi en avant, corne, organes génitaux externes masculins, branche d’un arbre » doit avoir eu l’antonyme AIr. *. /parā̆.uu̯axṣ̌/ « grandi vers l’arrière », qui a été changé en ionien Πρηξ- /prēkhs/ avec la perte de Digamma et de la r-métathèse, et plus tard au nouveau paráxš ira-nien avec la perte du -v- intervocalique. De cette façon, Πρηξάσπης doit très probablement être l’interprétation ionienne du vieil iranien Bahuvrīhi AIr. *Para ̄̆.uu̯axṣ̌.aspa ̄̆- « celui qui a un cheval à croupe haute ».

Zusammenfassung: Das altiranische (AIr.) zusammengesetzte Anthroponym, dem das Ionische Πρηξάσπης /prēk(h)sáspēs/ in den Geschichten des Herodot entspricht, ist unbekannt. In den vorhandenen altiranischen Quellen gibt es kein Wort, dessen Ionische Form Πρηξ- /prēk(h)s/ gewesen sein könnte. Hier, nach einer kurzen Einführung zweier Namensträger und der Diskussion früherer Vorschläge, beginnend mit dem frühneuiranischen (FNIr.) شْ خْ رَ َپ /paráxš/ ‘menschliches Gesäß, Hinterteil eines Tieres, Hinterteil eines Pferdes’, dessen Ionische Form Πρηξ /prēkhs/ ist, es wird gezeigt, dass das bezeugte AIr. fra-uu̯axṣ̌- ‘nach vorne herausgewachsen, Horn, männliche äußere Genitalien, Ast eines Baumes’ muss das Antonym AIr. *. /parā̆.uu̯axṣ̌/ ‘nach hinten herausgewachsen’ gehabt haben, das mit dem Verlust von Digamma und einer r-Metathese in das Ionische Πρηξ- /prēkhs/ und später mit dem Verlust des intervokalischen –v– in das FNIr. paráxš geändert wurde. Auf diese Weise muss Πρηξάσπης höchstwahrscheinlich die Ionische Wiedergabe des Bahuvrīhi AIr. *Para ̄̆.uu̯axṣ̌.aspa ̄̆- ‘jemand der ein überbautes Pferd hat’ gewesen sein.
