Abstract: Name typology is key to understanding the naming systems among cultures across the globe. Currently, there are socio-onomastic typologies for place, personal, and church names but not for plant names. What is known about plants is the standardized binomial system regulated by the International Code of Nomenclature. This paper thus adopts a socio-onomastic approach to offer a typology of plant names among the Asantes in Ghana through a socio-onomastic lens. Herbalists and elders from Asante communities in the Ashanti and Ahafo Regions were interviewed regarding the history, pragmatics, and semantics of plant names. Drawing on the social, historical, and linguistic insights from the interview data, as well as our knowledge as members of the Asante speech communities, the paper categorizes the names based on identifiable themes. The plants are classified based on historical, sociocultural, semantic, pragmatic, and ethno-phytomorphological factors. The study reveals that the naming of plants is influenced by both endogenous and exogenous factors, which respectively concern the Asante worldview and cross-cultural contact.
