Abstract: The most significant changes on the toponymic map of modern Greece occurred during the interwar period, following the population exchange between Greece and Turkey in 1924, which re-sulted from their previous war. However, the process of toponymic renaming has served the ideology of “purification” since the 19th century and thus the use of place names as evidence of “Greekness” has been of great importance. However, despite the official strategy of (re)naming, the resilience of older toponyms is remarkable ‒ precisely because it reveals their importance in the construction of identity memory. In this paper, we explore both the linguistic strategies of to-ponymic renaming in Greece and their ideological context, examining how the new place names affected the ideology of identity. We also present two typical examples where the use or the renaming of a to-ponym has led to sharp disputes and was of crucial importance.

Stratégies linguistiques et politiques de renommage des toponymes en Grèce du XIXe au XXIe siècle
Résumé : Les plus grands changements sur la carte toponymique de la Grèce ont eu lieu pendant la période de l’entre-deux-guerres, suite à l’échange de population entre la Grèce et la Turquie en 1924 qui a résulté de la guerre entre ces deux nations. Cependant, les changements de nom toponymiques ont favorisé l’idéologie de « purification » depuis le 19e siècle puisque l’utilisation de noms de lieux comme preuve de « Grecité » a été de grande importance. Or, malgré la stratégie officielle de changement de nom, la résilience des anciens toponymes est remarquable, dès lors qu’elle révèle leur importance dans la construction de la mémoire d’identité. Dans cet article, nous explorons aussi bien les stratégies linguistiques de changements de nom toponymiques en Grèce que leur contexte idéologique, en exa-minant la manière dont les nouveaux noms de lieu ont affecté l’idéologie d’identité. Nous présentons également deux exemples typiques selon lesquels l’utilisation ou le changement de nom d’un to-ponyme ont provoqué des conflits vifs et furent d’importance cruciale.

Linguistische und politische Strategien von toponymi-schen Umbenennungen in Griechenland vom 19. bis ins 21. Jahrhundert
Zusammenfassung: Die meisten Umbenennungen im heutigen Griechenland erfolgten während der Zwischenkriegszeit, nach dem Bevölkerungsaustausch zwischen Griechenland und der Türkei im Jahr 1924. Umbenennungen dienten jedoch seit dem 19. Jahrhundert der Ideologie der „Reinigung“ und die Verwendung von Toponymen wurde zum Beleg für Griechentum. Trotz der offiziellen Strategie der Umbenennung ist die Widerstandsfähigkeit älterer Toponyme bemerkenswert – gerade weil sie deren Bedeutung für den Aufbau einer Identität offenbart. In diesem Beitrag untersuchen wir sowohl die Strategien toponymischer Umbenennung in Griechenland als auch deren ideologischen Kontext und gehen der Frage nach, wie sich die neuen Ortsnamen auf die Identität auswirken. Außerdem stellen wir zwei typische Beispiele vor, bei denen die Umbenennung zu ernsten Streitigkeiten geführt hat.
