Abstract: The subject of this article is the renaming campaign of streets in the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv, since the beginning of the Russo-Ukrainian war in 2014. The renaming process was analysed in two main aspects: linguistic and broader ethnocultural. Within the linguistic aspect, it was established that in most cases, the renaming occurs within the same category, i.e., an anthroponym is replaced by an anthroponym, a toponym by a toponym, with anthroponyms performing primarily a commemorative function. These two categories of proper names play a primary role in the formation of urbanonyms. Some other classes, such as names of urban objects and common nouns, are also productive. The ethnocultural analysis highlighted some significant features of the process of forming a new Ukrainian identity. First and foremost, it involves the rejection of any Russian influences. The creation of a new Ukrainian myth relies on the Ukrainian pantheon, consisting of outstanding figures in science and culture, politicians, and military leaders from both the past and present, whose memory is now commemorated in street names. A significant element in forming the new myth is also the symbolic appropriation of geographical space. Ukrainian streets now bear the names of geographical objects located in Ukraine or friendly countries, with the foreign toponyms indicating the direction of Ukraine’s international relations. The return of old historical names and microtopo-nyms to the city’s map played a significant role in the renaming process, contributing to the preservation of historical memory and continuity. A new trend is the use of collective names, mainly designations of military units, whose memory is commemorated in street names.
