Onoma publishes topical research reports as well as articles and book reviews of general, theoretical and historical interest concerning all areas of scholarly name research. The Editorial Board of Onoma acknow-ledges the fact that artificial intelligence (AI) tools and technology may support researchers in planning and conducting their work. Thus, authors may employ AI tools so long as this is done transparently and in observance of the principles of ethical and academic integrity.
The use of AI tools and technology in any stage of the research and writing process falls under the scope of the Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement of Onoma (https://onomajournal.org/publication-ethics-and-malpractice-statement/). Several additional provisions must be followed:
- Onoma adheres to COPE’s position statement regarding Authorship and AI tools (https://publicationethics.org/guidance/cope-position/authorship-and-ai-tools). AI tools and technology cannot be considered to generate arguments and substitute for scholarly interpretation. Therefore, AI cannot be listed as an author or as a co – author of any kind of manuscript submitted for publication.
- Authors may turn to AI tools to facilitate their bibliographical research, as well as to aid them in processing and analysing large data sets, generating and editing figures (graphs), translating, proofreading, and editing manuscripts. Any such use must be explained in the Methodology section of the paper if relevant and disclosed in the Acknowledgments (please see item 4 below for a possible disclosure statement). The authors must verify the AI output to make sure that it is accurate, relevant, unbiased, and within the scope of ethical and academic integrity.
- The use of AI technology for the correction of spelling and grammati-cal errors which does not imply extensive rewriting of texts does not need to be indicated (the authors should contact the editors if they have any doubts or queries).
- Any more complex employment of AI tools must be disclosed in the Acknowledgments section of the manuscript. Please consider the following statement as an example (it may be rephrased as appropriate):
“The authors used [NAME AND VERSION OF THE AI TOOL] in the research and/or writing process of the submitted manuscript to carry out the following tasks: [SPECIFY TASKS], as explained in the Methodology section of the manuscript [IF APPLICABLE]. Any limitations and biases entailed by the use of [AI TOOL] have been addressed in the paper. The authors have subsequently verified the accuracy and validity of the results of the AI supported processes and made every necessary revision. By submitting a paper for publication in Onoma, the authors express their adherence to the principles of the AI Policy and the Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement of the journal. The full responsibility for all the aspects of a manuscript published in Onoma lies with the authors.”
- Authors must be aware of any ownership claims or usage limitations underlying the employment of any content generated by the AI tools utilised. These restrictions may lead to copyright infringement and may therefore interfere with the authors’ and/or with Onoma’s rights to use the manuscript, including its publication.
- Authors assume full responsibility for the accuracy, relevance, validi-ty, and authenticity of the content of their manuscripts, whether the submissions are produced using AI tools or not. At the same time, the authors must make sure that they observe the ethical and integrity standards promoted by Onoma (see Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement, https://onomajournal.org/publication-ethics-and-malpractice-statement/) and that they declare any potential conflict of interests upon submitting their manuscript for publication (see Conflict of interests policy, https://onomajournal.org/conflict-of-interests-policy/).
- Editors and reviewers must not use AI technology in the peer-review process if this involves uploading manuscripts and parts of manuscripts (including data sets, tables, and figures) into AI tools, as this could lead to copyright infringement. At the same time, the peer-review process cannot be delegated to AI tools. The peer-review process should observe Onoma’s editorial and peer-review policies as stipulated in the Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement (https://onomajournal.org/publication-ethics-and-malpractice-statement/) and in the peer-review guidelines (https://onomajournal.org/peer-review/). The responsibility and accountability for conducting peer reviews rest with the human individuals who have accepted the invitation issued by the Editor-in-Chief/guest-editor(s).
